Our Poet Sri-Sri

Maha Kavi SRI SRI, does not need an introduction to the people of telugu and other regions of India. He is a great radical poet and novelist who worked for the people, fought for the people and lived for ever in their hearts. His words were the spearheads for the politicians who disgrace the poor.Today on his Jayanthi (Birthday) I wish to say few words about such a great person.

Sri Rangam Srinivas (30th April 1910- 15 June 1983) popularly known as Sri Sri was a great poet and lyricist. He was born at my birth place Visakhapatnam, Andhra pradesh on 30th April 1910 and lived to the age of 73. His higher education is from Madras and later Joined as Sub-Editor in "Andhra Prabha" daily newspaper. All India Radio and Armed forces, were also his work places later. He entered movie world in 1950 with the movie Ahuti which made him famous lyricist. He is so influenced by all the circumstances around him and became a poet. His style of writings are unique and are visionary. His classical telugu poetry is based on the day-to-day life of a common man and he has written lyrics for over 1000 sound tracks in Telugu. His Padavoyi Bharatheeyuda (literally - Start singing O! Indian) of Velugu Needalu (1961), Telugu veera levara (literally - O brave Telugu born, wake up!!) of Alluri Seetha Rama Raju (the song won National Award for best lyric), Nenu saitham(literally - I too have been the fuel for this great activity of building up the world..) of Mahaprastanam were quite popular. The song is used in the movie Rudraveena.

MahaPrasthanam(the great Journey), an anthology of poems is one of his major works. The collected work was originally published at the behest of Sri Sri's friend and fellow poet Jalasutram Rukmineenatha Sastry in 1950 (Nalini Kumar Pub., Machilipatnam). Later the book went through very many printings issued by Visalandhra Publishing House. It would be an understatement to say that its publication brought in a revolutionary change. It is one of the most important works in the history of Telugu and Indian LiteratureSiprali and Khadga Srusthi( Creation of Sword ) are also from his rack. He is awarded with Sahithya Academy award, Soviet Land Nehru Award, National film award for best lyrics, Nandi award for best lyricist, Raja Lakshmi Award.

He is also famous for his quotes. Some of the best which I liked are here translated:

"1930 daaka sahityam nannu nadipinchindi. aa tharvaatha nunchi daanni neaenu nadipisthunaanu." ("Till 1930, Telugu literature showed me the way. After that, I am showing it the way.")

"kastajeevi ki mundhu venuka undevaade kavi" (play of words: 'Ka'stajee'vi' means working class man, 'kavi' means poet, Srisri says, a poet is always at the beginning and the end of a working class man, he is giving a hint as to where he derives is inspiration)

"Telugu vadi jathiya gunam orvaleni thanam." (National feeling of the great Telugu nation - Jealousy).

Though I have the complete PDF of Mahaprasthanam, I hope it should not be uploaded here
